How to install a Thailand eSIM on iPhone

Scan the QR, label the line, and pick it for data.

Quick answer

On iPhone, go to Settings, then Cellular (or Mobile Service), then Add eSIM, and scan the QR code from your email. Label the new line “Thailand” and choose it for Cellular Data. Keep your home line for calls and texts. Install on Wi-Fi before you fly.

What do I need before installing?

Check these three things first. They are the usual reasons an install fails.

  • An eSIM-capable iPhone (XS, XR, or newer) that is not locked to your home carrier.
  • A stable Wi-Fi connection.
  • The QR code on another screen: open the email or your order page on a laptop or tablet, or print it.

How do I install the eSIM on iPhone?

Names can differ slightly between iOS versions and regions. Cellular is called Mobile Service or Mobile Data in some countries.

  1. 1Open Settings and tap Cellular (or Mobile Service).
  2. 2Tap Add eSIM, then Use QR Code.
  3. 3Scan the QR code from your email or order page.
  4. 4When asked, label the new line “Thailand” and keep your home line as Primary.
  5. 5For Default Voice Line choose your home line; for Cellular Data choose Thailand.
  6. 6Turn off Allow Cellular Data Switching, so data never falls back to your home line.

What if I can’t scan the QR code?

Under Add eSIM, choose Enter Details Manually. The install code below the QR in your email looks like LPA:1$address$code. Enter the part between the two $ signs as the SM-DP+ Address, and the part after the second $ as the Activation Code.

You can only install each eSIM once, so do not delete it after installing.

What do I do when I land in Thailand?

Turn off airplane mode, go to Settings, then Cellular, and make sure the Thailand line is on and selected for Cellular Data. This eSIM runs on the local True–DTAC network, so you do not need to turn on data roaming for it. Keep roaming off on your home line unless you want your carrier’s charges.

Frequently asked questions

Will I keep my WhatsApp number?

+

Yes. WhatsApp is tied to your account, not to the data line. It keeps working with your usual number while the Thailand eSIM provides the data.

Can I delete the eSIM after the trip?

+

Yes, after the plan ends. Go to Settings, then Cellular, tap the Thailand line, and choose Delete eSIM. Do not delete it during the trip, because the same QR cannot be installed again.

Do iPhones from mainland China support eSIM?

+

Most iPhones sold in mainland China use two physical SIM slots instead of eSIM. Check by going to Settings, then General, then About: if you see a Digital SIM or EID entry, the phone supports eSIM.
